Crittall-style room dividers

A Crittall-style room divider is a freestanding or partial-height glazed screen that zones a large space into areas, such as a dining corner or a sleeping area in a loft. It defines the room without closing it off.

Why people choose room dividers

Big open-plan spaces often feel unfinished because nothing tells you where the kitchen ends and the living room starts. A divider gives the space a structure you can see through. It can stop short of the ceiling, run part of the width, or sit on a bench or bookcase base.

Where it works

  • Separating a sleeping area in a warehouse or loft apartment
  • Giving a dining table its own room inside a kitchen extension
  • Screening an entrance so the front door does not open straight into the living area
  • Defining a reading corner or playroom without blocking sightlines

How much does it cost?

As a guide, room dividers cost £4,000 to £8,900 for a typical size, fitted and including VAT. Steel-look aluminium sits at the lower end and solid steel at the upper end. Size, bar pattern, glass and doors make the difference. Use the design and price tool for your own size, or read the full cost guide.

Questions about room dividers

Is a room divider the same as a screen?

They are made the same way. A divider usually stops short of a wall or ceiling so you can walk around it, whereas a screen fills an opening edge to edge.

Will a divider wobble if it is not fixed to a wall?

Not when it is designed properly. Long or tall dividers get a fixing into the ceiling or a concealed floor fixing, and we size the frame for the span at survey.

Can I add shelving or a bench to the base?

Yes. The divider can sit on a joinery base, which is a good way to hide radiators or add storage. We agree the base height at survey so the bars line up.
