Crittall-style pivot doors

A Crittall-style pivot door is a tall glazed door that rotates on a pivot set into the floor and the head, rather than hanging on side hinges. It lets the door be taller and wider than a normal leaf and becomes the centrepiece of the room.

Why people choose pivot doors

Pivot doors are for openings where you want impact: a double-height hall, the way into a dressing room, the entrance to a principal suite. Because the weight sits on the floor pivot, leaves can go up to around 2.7m tall. The pivot point is set in from the edge, so part of the door swings each way.

Where it works

  • Into a main bedroom or dressing room
  • Off a double-height entrance hall
  • Between a living room and a garden room
  • As the feature door in a renovated barn or warehouse

Questions about pivot doors

Does a pivot door need a special floor?

The bottom pivot is set into the floor, so we need to know the finished floor build-up. On timber floors we add a fixing plate; on screed we core into it.

Do pivot doors swing both ways?

They can, but most are set to open one way with a stop. The part of the leaf on the other side of the pivot moves the opposite way, which we allow for at design stage.

Are pivot doors good for small rooms?

Not usually. They need clear space on both sides of the pivot, so they suit larger rooms and wide hallways.
