Crittall-style sliding doors
A Crittall-style sliding door is a glazed steel or steel-look aluminium door that runs along a top track instead of swinging on hinges. It suits tight spaces and wide openings where a hinged door would get in the way.

Why people choose sliding doors
When furniture, radiators or a staircase sit where a door would swing, sliding is the answer. The door can slide across the face of the wall on an exposed track, which is part of the look, or behind a fixed glazed panel as part of a full screen.
Where it works
- Into a study or snug off a hallway
- Between a kitchen and a utility room
- Across a wide opening between two living spaces
- To an en-suite where the room is too small for a swinging door
How much does it cost?
As a guide, sliding doors cost £2,100 to £4,400 for a typical size, fitted and including VAT. Steel-look aluminium sits at the lower end and solid steel at the upper end. Size, bar pattern, glass and doors make the difference. Use the design and price tool for your own size, or read the full cost guide.

Questions about sliding doors
Do sliding doors seal well?
They seal less tightly than a hinged door, so they suit rooms where sound and smells matter less. If privacy matters, we fit brush seals and acoustic glass.
Can the wall above take the weight of the track?
A steel-framed door is heavy, so the track is fixed into a timber or steel header we fit behind the plaster. We check the wall at survey.
How wide can a sliding door be?
Single leaves up to about 1.2m wide are common. Wider openings use a pair that part in the middle.
