Why people choose fire-rated screens

Loft conversions that create a third storey, flats, and many commercial buildings need fire-resisting walls and doors around the stairs or corridors. Standard glazing is not allowed there. A fire-rated system is tested as a complete assembly, so the frame, glass, seals and ironmongery all come from the tested specification and are installed to it.

Where it works

  • Hallways and stairs in three-storey houses
  • Kitchens opening onto an escape route in flats
  • Commercial corridors and stair cores
  • HMOs and conversions with protected routes

How much does it cost?

Questions about fire-rated screens

Do I need fire-rated glazing in my house?

If your home has a floor more than 4.5m above ground level, which usually means a loft conversion on a two-storey house, the stairs typically need to be a protected route. Glazing onto it then needs to be fire-rated. Your building control body confirms the requirement.

Are fire-rated screens more expensive?

Yes. Fire glass and a tested steel system cost considerably more than standard glazing, often roughly double per square metre.

Can you certify the installation?

We supply the manufacturer's test or assessment evidence for the system and install it to that specification, so building control can sign it off.
