Crittall-style bifold doors

Crittall-style bifold doors are external folding doors with slim frames and glazing bars that concertina to one side to open the full width of an opening. They combine the open-up of bifolds with the period character of gridded steel.

Why people choose bifold doors

Standard bifolds have chunky frames and plain glass. A gridded version keeps the full-width opening but looks at home on a period extension. We usually recommend three to five leaves; more leaves mean more frame when closed, so it is a balance between the open and closed view.

Where it works

  • Rear extensions with a wide opening to the garden
  • Kitchen-diners opening to a patio
  • Garden rooms and summer houses
  • Barn conversions with large openings

Questions about bifold doors

Do gridded bifolds look busy when open?

When folded, the leaves stack together so the bars read as one slim block at the side of the opening.

What is the widest opening?

Around 6m is common for a set of bifolds. Above that we look at a fixed panel combined with doors, or sliding doors.

Do bifold doors need a steel lintel?

The opening needs a lintel or beam designed to take the load with very little deflection, so the doors keep running smoothly. Your builder or engineer specifies it; we confirm the deflection limit.
