Crittall-style external doors
Crittall-style external doors are double-glazed, weather-sealed steel or steel-look aluminium doors, usually a French pair, that open from the house to the garden. They give an extension or back room the slim, gridded look with modern security and insulation.

Why people choose external french doors
External doors have a harder job than internal ones: they keep out rain and draughts, hold heat in and stand up to someone trying to get in. They use thermally broken frames, double or triple glazing and multi-point locks. The look is the same slim grid, a little deeper in section.
Where it works
- Rear extensions opening to a terrace
- Replacing old French doors from a dining room
- Side returns opening onto a courtyard
- Garden rooms and orangeries
How much does it cost?
As a guide, external french doors cost £3,800 to £8,300 for a typical size, fitted and including VAT. Steel-look aluminium sits at the lower end and solid steel at the upper end. Size, bar pattern, glass and doors make the difference. Use the design and price tool for your own size, or read the full cost guide.

Questions about external french doors
Do external doors need Building Regulations approval?
Replacement doors must meet the energy and safety parts of Building Regulations. Installers registered with a competent person scheme can self-certify; otherwise the job goes through building control. We confirm which route applies before you order.
Are steel-look aluminium doors as warm as uPVC?
Thermally broken aluminium with good double glazing performs comparably and meets current regulations. Solid steel doors use special thermally improved sections.
How secure are they?
We specify multi-point locking and laminated inner panes. Doors tested to PAS 24 security standards are available.
