Classic Grid Crittall-Style Screens
The classic grid is the look most people picture: evenly spaced vertical and horizontal bars forming rectangular panes, usually taller than they are wide. It suits almost any room because the rhythm is calm and regular.
Suits: Victorian and Edwardian houses, 1930s semis, new kitchens and extensions

Getting the classic grid look right
The grid comes from the standard metal windows of the early twentieth century, where small panes were cheaper to glaze. Today the bars are decorative, but their spacing still sets the mood. Panes around 300 to 450mm wide feel traditional; wider panes feel more modern.
We line the bars up with things already in the room where we can: door heads, cabinet tops, picture rails. A screen whose bars meet the kitchen worktop line looks designed rather than added.

Questions about this style
How many panes should my screen have?
Aim for panes between 300 and 450mm wide and keep the rows slightly taller than the columns are wide. We draw two or three options at survey so you can see the difference.
Should the bars line up with my doors?
Ideally, yes. Lining the horizontal bars up with door heads and worktops makes the screen feel part of the house.
