Crittall-style windows
Crittall-style windows are slim-framed steel or steel-look aluminium windows with glazing bars, in the style of the metal windows fitted to many British homes from the 1920s to the 1950s. They replace tired original metal windows or add the look to a new build.

Why people choose windows
Original metal windows are common on 1930s semis and Art Deco houses, and many have rusted or lost their seals. Modern replacements keep the slim lines and horizontal bars but add double glazing and proper weather seals. In a conservation area the detail matters, so we draw the bars and sightlines to match the originals.
Where it works
- Replacing original metal windows in 1930s houses
- Art Deco and Modernist homes
- Warehouse and factory conversions
- New extensions that need to match the house
How much does it cost?
As a guide, windows cost £1,250 to £2,800 for a typical size, fitted and including VAT. Steel-look aluminium sits at the lower end and solid steel at the upper end. Size, bar pattern, glass and doors make the difference. Use the design and price tool for your own size, or read the full cost guide.

Questions about windows
Can I replace metal windows in a conservation area?
Often yes, if the replacements match the originals closely. Some areas have an Article 4 direction that needs planning permission. We draw the existing and proposed windows so your application is straightforward.
Are steel-look windows energy efficient?
Thermally broken aluminium frames with modern double glazing meet current Building Regulations for replacement windows.
How long do steel-look windows take to make?
Usually 4 to 6 weeks from signed-off drawings for steel, and 4 to 5 weeks for aluminium.
